Mexico earthquake: One killed and buildings damaged after tremor near Mexico City – video. One person has died and buildings have been damaged after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Mexico.

The quake hit at 8.41pm on Tuesday, according to the US Geological Survey, and was centered about 70km (43 miles) west of the town of Puerto Madero, in Guerrero state.

Giving way to the Pacific Ocean, the city of Acapulco and its resort hotels and casinos is not accustomed to earthquake tremors. But residents of the Pacific Coast resort, and the 100,000 tourists who flock there annually, were jolted late Thursday by a strong temblor.

The U.S. Geological Survey said it was a magnitude 5.9 quake that hit around 9:40 p.m. (0440 GMT). It was centered about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the city, which is about 200 miles (320 kilometers) south-southwest of Mexico City.

The 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit at around 10:45pm (04:45 GMT) near the Pacific coast city of Matias Romero, in Oaxaca state, the US Geological Survey said.

Fortunately, there was not greater damage,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Wednesday.

Showers and thunderstorms forecast for later Wednesday in both Mexico City and Acapulco could make the cleanup more difficult – and prove uncomfortable for people sleeping outside damaged homes.

“The next several days will feature a typical summertime pattern with afternoon pop-up thunderstorms in the Mexico City area,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Alex DaSilva. “Anyone assisting with the earthquake cleanup will want to keep an eye to the sky for these pop-up afternoon storms.”
