Why is it called labour day? In Canada, at least, the origins of this day are shrouded in mystery. The closest thing to a solid answer comes from a 19th century version of Wikipedia called the Encyclopedia Britannica.
It says the origins of the holiday can be traced back to a Toronto labour protest in 1872. Toronto was a different place back then.
It was a smaller city and a lot dirtier. Politically, it was a hotbed of corruption.
The biggest employer in town was the railroad.
In the summer of 1872, hundreds of men working on the tracks went on strike. They were demanding a 10-percent wage increase and an eight-hour work day after seven days of work. Their employers refused and used strike breakers — mostly immigrants — to keep the trains running.
The strike eventually failed but it would go down in Canadian history as one of the earliest organized protests for workers rights in North America.
As it turns out, there’s no good reason for Labour Day to be on the first Monday in September. The choice was entirely arbitrary, based on an (unsuccessful) attempt by the U.S. labour movement to make a holiday out of International Workers’ Day, which is also celebrated on May 1.
